If you’ve got a stash of blueberries in your fridge, pantry, or freezer, it’s time for a quick inspection! The FDA has issued a Class I recall — the most serious level — for a batch of organic blueberries due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

This dangerous bacteria can cause serious illness or even death, especially in vulnerable groups like pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
What’s Been Recalled?
The recall, issued by Alma Pak International LLC, affects 400 boxes of 30-pound organic blueberries, shipped to a single customer in North Carolina. It was first announced on June 9, but has now been upgraded to a Class I recall after routine FDA testing found traces of listeria.

Why Is Listeria So Dangerous?
According to the CDC, listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., responsible for about 260 deaths per year. It’s a type of bacteria that can grow even in refrigerated environments.

Common Symptoms of Listeriosis Include:
- Fever and chills
- Muscle aches
- Nausea or diarrhea
- Headaches and stiff neck (in severe cases)
In most healthy people, symptoms are mild or even unnoticeable. But for pregnant women, the infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or newborn infection. People with weakened immune systems are also at much higher risk.
Other High-Risk Foods to Watch Out For
The UK’s NHS warns that the following items are more likely to be contaminated with listeria:
- Pre-packed deli meats
- Smoked fish (e.g., sushi)
- Unpasteurized milk & cheeses like brie or camembert
- Pâtés and pre-prepared salads
- Pre-cut fruit
Proper food hygiene, storage, and cooking can greatly reduce your risk.
Why This Recall Matters
This recall comes just weeks after another listeria-linked outbreak involving FreshRealm’s chicken fettuccine alfredo, which resulted in 3 deaths and a fetal loss, as reported by the USDA.
With over 300 food recalls issued in the U.S. last year alone, foodborne illnesses are on the rise, and recalls are becoming more frequent.
