Vanessa Chaput, a 24-year-old mom from Canada, recently survived a terrifying encounter with not one but four grizzly bears—thanks, in part, to her dog and an ordinary $7 hair clip.

On the evening of June 30, Vanessa was jogging with her Alsatian, Luna, along the Trans Canada Trail in Yukon. Suddenly, the pair stumbled upon a group of grizzlies, with one massive male launching a brutal attack after Luna chased off two smaller bears.
“The bear took me down, it took my head in its mouth,” Vanessa told TODAY. “You feel like a rag doll. There’s nothing you can do.”
As she tried to shield herself behind a tree, the bear clamped down on her head. But in a stroke of bizarre luck, Vanessa’s plastic hair clip exploded in the bear’s mouth, startling it. Combined with Luna’s fierce barking, the distraction was enough to send the grizzly running.
“I think the spring in the clip snapped in his mouth,” she explained in an Inside Edition interview. “It was enough to make him let go.”
Despite her terrifying injuries—nerve damage, puncture wounds, and over 30 stitches—Vanessa managed to reach the highway and call 911. She spent 10 days in the hospital but is now recovering at home.
🐕 Luna the Hero, and the Aftermath
Luna’s bravery likely saved Vanessa’s life. Her loyalty didn’t go unnoticed, and many online are calling her a “hero dog.”
The Yukon Conservation Officer Services responded quickly. They euthanized one bear found near the attack site and later located and euthanized two others due to safety concerns. A fourth bear is still being tracked using drones and helicopters. A full investigation and necropsies are underway.

“This could happen to anyone. Wrong place, wrong time,” Vanessa said in a televised interview with CTV News. “I don’t blame the bears or my dog.”
