When you think of bowel cancer, you might imagine it’s something only older people need to worry about. Sadly, new research says otherwise — and the numbers are eye-opening.
Recent data from the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society shows a worrying trend: bowel cancer rates are rising among people under 50 in 27 countries. This includes parts of Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia.
In the UK, Cancer Research UK reports that 1 in 20 bowel cancer cases now affects someone under 50.

One doctor on a mission to spread awareness is Dr. Zion, known on TikTok as @dr.zionko. As both a physician and someone living with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), her message is deeply personal:
“Colon cancer doesn’t just happen to ‘old people.’ Rates are rising in young adults, and early detection saves lives.”
So, how do you know when to get checked? Dr. Zion shares five key symptoms you should never ignore:
1. Changes in Bowel Habits
If your bathroom routine suddenly changes — whether it’s size, color, consistency, or frequency — and it sticks around, talk to your GP.
2. Unexplained Iron Deficiency
Low iron without a clear reason can be a red flag. Watch for fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations.
3. Blood in Your Stool
Whether it’s bright red or dark black, blood is never “normal.” Get it checked immediately.
4. Unintentional Weight Loss
Dropping weight without trying could point to a serious health problem, bowel cancer included.
5. Persistent Abdominal Pain
From dull aches to sharp cramps, ongoing abdominal pain should always be investigated.
Dr. Zion’s golden rule?
💬 “Don’t be afraid to look at your poop, talk about your poop, and ask questions — because we all poop. If something feels off, don’t wait.”
If you have a family history of bowel cancer or genetic conditions like HNPCC, screening could be the difference between catching it early and missing your window.
Bottom Line
Bowel cancer in young adults is on the rise, but awareness and early action can save lives. Check in with your doctor if you notice these symptoms, and don’t be shy about discussing your bathroom habits. Your future self will thank you.
