Doctor warns ‘gross thing will happen’ if you don’t wash body part that most people overlook.

When it comes to personal hygiene, we’re all pretty good at remembering the big ones: brushing our teeth, washing our hair, taking regular showers.
But according to Dr. Jen Caudle — a Board-Certified Family Physician and on-air health expert — there’s one tiny spot we often overlook: the belly button.

Yes, that small, innocent-looking navel you probably haven’t thought about since the day you were born can actually collect months’ worth of buildup if ignored. And that’s not just gross — it can cause real medical issues.

Why Cleaning Your Belly Button Matters

Dr. Jen explains that your belly button is essentially the scar left behind from your umbilical cord being cut at birth. For people with “innie” belly buttons especially, moisture, lint, skin cells, and oils can easily get trapped inside.
If it’s not cleaned regularly, here’s what can happen:

  1. Bacterial Infections
An unwashed navel is the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. This can cause foul smells, redness, pain, and even pus — often requiring antibiotics.
  2. Yeast Infections
Similar to bacterial infections but caused by fungi, these can lead to itching, irritation, and discharge.
  3. Belly Button Stones (Omphaloliths)
This is when debris and dead skin compact into a hard, blackish lump. They might look like giant blackheads — and yes, you’ll likely need a doctor to remove them.

How to Clean Your Belly Button (Without Hurting It)

Dr. Jen suggests different approaches depending on your navel type:

  • For “Innies”
    1. Dip a cotton swab or washcloth in warm, soapy water.
    2. Gently clean in small circles inside the belly button.
    3. Use a clean, damp swab to remove any soap.
    4. Pat completely dry to avoid trapping moisture.
  • For “Outies”
    1. Wash in the shower with mild soap and your fingers or a cloth.
    2. Rinse thoroughly.
    3. Dry well after bathing.

Bottom Line

Cleaning your belly button might not feel like a top priority, but adding it to your regular hygiene routine can save you from infections, discomfort, and awkward doctor visits. It’s quick, easy, and makes your overall self-care just a little more complete.

So next time you’re in the shower, give your navel some love — your future self (and your doctor) will thank you.
