Michigan Woman Wins $100K Lottery After Asking ChatGPT to Pick Her Numbers
A 45-year-old Michigan resident turned a bold experiment with artificial intelligence into a substantial lottery victory. Tammy Carvey of Wyandotte decided to ask ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, for a set of numbers to play in the Powerball draw — and those numbers helped her claim a $100,000 prize. This extraordinary story is both a testament to luck and a cautionary tale about relying on technology for chance-based games.
How it happened
When the Powerball jackpot climbed past $1 billion, Carvey decided it was time to play. She told lottery officials:
“I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there and the jackpot was over $1 billion, so I bought a ticket.” (FOX 2 Detroit)
Instead of choosing her own numbers or taking a quick-pick, Carvey asked ChatGPT for a combination, and then used those numbers on her ticket. The set (11, 23, 44, 61, 62 plus Powerball 17) matched four white balls and the red Powerball in the Sept. 6 drawing. (Michigan Lottery Connect)
Having added the “Power Play” feature on her ticket, her base prize of $50,000 was doubled to $100,000. (NBC Chicago)
Initially checking via Google, Carvey believed she had won “only” $50,000. It wasn’t until she logged into her official Missouri Lottery account that she discovered the true total.
“Google told me it was a $50,000 prize … It wasn’t until I logged into my Michigan Lottery account that I realized I added the Power Play … and actually won $100,000! My husband and I were in total disbelief.” (FOX 2 Detroit)
What she will do with the money
Carvey plans to use the windfall in a practical way: paying off the remainder of her home mortgage and then saving the rest. (Cars 108)
What the lottery officials say
The Michigan Lottery emphasised that all lottery drawings are random and cannot be predicted by AI or any number‐generating tool.

A parallel story
Carvey’s win is not the first of its kind. In Virginia, Carrie Edwards of Midlothian used ChatGPT to generate her numbers for a Powerball ticket and ended up winning $150,000 (initial $50,000 prize tripled via PowerPlay). She chose to donate every penny to charity. (Entrepreneur)
