Imagine waking up on an operating table — not for a procedure you agreed to, but for your organs to be removed. That’s exactly what happened to Danella Gallegos, a 38-year-old woman from New Mexico, in a shocking real-life medical nightmare that has stunned the internet.
Back in 2022, Danella, who was homeless at the time, was admitted to Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque after suffering a severe medical emergency. Doctors informed her family that she would never recover and encouraged them to consider organ donation.
With a heavy heart, her family agreed — and that’s when New Mexico Donor Services stepped in to begin organ procurement preparations.
But the story took a wild turn.

Danella’s family claims they noticed tears rolling down her cheeks days before the surgery. Doctors reportedly brushed it off as a reflex, a common reaction in coma patients. However, the family felt something was off — and they were right.

On the day of the scheduled organ removal, Danella’s sisters noticed her moving and responding while holding her hand. Despite this, she was still taken to pre-op, and preparations moved forward.
🛑 Doctors Say No — Just in Time
Things escalated when Danella blinked on command, leaving medical staff stunned. According to a New York Times report, an organ coordinator insisted it was another reflex and reportedly pushed for morphine to dull her movements and continue with the surgery.
Thankfully, the doctors refused to proceed, pulled Danella out of the surgery suite, and saved her life. She went on to make a full recovery and now calls it a miracle.

“I feel so fortunate,” Danella told the NYT. “But it’s also crazy to think how close things came to ending differently.”

Presbyterian Hospital stated that New Mexico Donor Services was responsible for the donation process. In turn, Donor Services claimed they don’t interfere with medical decisions, contradicting the hospital’s statement. An investigation is now underway.
