Why some women are getting surgery after taking Ozempic as little-known side effect explained.

Ozempic has quickly become one of the most talked-about medications in recent years. Originally developed as a GLP-1 receptor agonist to help people with type 2 diabetes, it’s also being used off-label for weight loss by thousands around the world.

But along with dramatic transformations, some women are reporting an unexpected—and very personal—side effect nicknamed “Ozempic vulva.”

What Exactly Is “Ozempic Vulva”?

Although it’s not an official medical diagnosis, some doctors and women online are using the term to describe changes in the vulvar area after rapid weight loss on GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.

According to Forbes, women have reported:

  • Sagging skin and weaker muscles around the vulva
  • Dryness and discomfort
  • Loss of fat pads, which normally cushion the area
  • In some cases, increased vaginal discharge

One woman on Reddit shared her experience:

“I’ve lost 20 kg (44 lbs) and no sagging on my tummy or arms. But when I went to the gynecologist for pain while biking, I was told I’d lost the fat pads in my vulva!”

Why Is This Happening?

Doctors believe the culprit isn’t necessarily Ozempic itself, but the rapid weight loss it can trigger. Just like people can experience loose skin in areas like the stomach or arms, the vulva can also lose volume when fat tissue disappears quickly.

As for the reported increase in vaginal discharge? The cause is still unclear.

What Can Be Done About It?

For women feeling self-conscious, cosmetic treatments are an option:

  • Labia puffing: A non-surgical procedure that restores fullness using dermal fillers. According to the Centre for Surgery, this can rejuvenate the labia majora and make them look more youthful.
  • Labiaplasty: A surgical procedure where doctors reshape, remove, or enhance tissue in the vulvar area.

Of course, these are optional procedures, and not everyone will feel the need for them.

What Do Experts Say?

A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, stressed that patient safety is a top priority:

“We continuously collect safety data on our medicines and work with authorities to ensure patient safety. We recommend patients use these medications only for their approved purposes and under the guidance of a healthcare provider.”

If you’re in the UK and experiencing side effects, you can report them to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

The Bottom Line

“Ozempic vulva” isn’t an official medical condition, but it’s a side effect some women are openly discussing after weight loss. While it may sound unusual, it highlights how rapid weight loss can affect the body in unexpected ways.

If you’re using Ozempic (or considering it), always talk to your doctor about potential side effects and remember—cosmetic concerns don’t take away from the health progress you’re making.
