Kidney cancer is often nicknamed the “silent disease”—and for a very worrying reason. Many people don’t realize they have it until it’s already advanced. In fact, Kidney Cancer UK reports that four in five cases are discovered by accident, often during tests for something completely unrelated.

Sadly, this makes kidney cancer one of the top 10 most common cancers in the United States, claiming thousands of lives every year. But here’s the good news: if you know the signs, you might just catch it early.
Why Kidney Cancer Often Goes Unnoticed
Hazel Jackson, lead nurse at Kidney Cancer UK, explains that symptoms can be vague and easy to shrug off. Things like back pain, chronic tiredness, or recurring urine infections often don’t set off alarm bells for most people. But sometimes, those subtle changes are your body’s way of waving a red flag.
🚩 The Biggest Red Flag: Blood in Your Urine
If there’s one symptom you should never ignore, it’s blood in your pee. And it doesn’t always look the way you think. It might be:
Deep red or brown urine
A faint pink tinge
Tiny specks of blood
Or even just blood at the very end of urination
Even if it only happens once—and even if it’s painless—don’t brush it off. Hazel warns:
“Any blood in your urine is abnormal and should be checked immediately. While it could be something minor like a kidney stone, it could also be an early sign of kidney cancer.”

Kidney cancer doesn’t just stop at one warning sign. Here are other symptoms to keep an eye on:
Persistent back or side pain (especially if it lingers)
Rapid, unexplained weight loss
Recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs) – while most UTIs are harmless, repeated ones could mask something more serious
Loss of appetite
High temperature and excessive sweating, especially at night
Trust Your Gut
The tricky part? These symptoms don’t always show up together. That’s why Hazel’s advice is simple:
“Don’t dismiss changes in your body—early diagnosis saves lives. If in doubt, get it checked.”
Kidney cancer is far easier to treat when caught early. And you know your body better than anyone, so listen to it.
The Takeaway
Kidney cancer may be silent, but the signs are there if you pay attention. If you notice any of the above, especially blood in your urine, don’t wait it out—see your doctor.
